Diabetic high indeed. Companies are making a profit through extra sugar to addict us to more of their product. While the previous sentence sounds dystopian, it unfortunately is true. Getting diabetes is irrelevant to someone’s profit margin as business ethics crumble in a heap for some. Of course, tobacco CEOs knew that nicotine was addictive dating back to the 1960s, which is why they were fined after eight CEOs lied to Congress in the 1990s.
We used to debate the question, if you were selling hot dogs at a ball game and found out that the hot dogs you bought with the majority of your cash would make folks ill, would you still sell them? The answer to too many today is yes.
Excellent comments, Keith. Thank you! Sugar is still farmed by some of the poorest people in the world. In some ways, it is just a different form of slavery. Large companies make profits by selling things…that’s the point. As you said, the health and welfare of humans is not part of their bottom line. Added sugar is just one of many “addictions” and “cravings” they cultivate. A consumer driven economy requires mass consumption, and we are good at it. We need to wake up, don’t we?
Absolutely. Between sugar and super sizing, we have become the most obese country in the world.
