Reasons #2

asked seed
of still mind
“Why empty?
My fall has roused and promised.”

and
thought
began

SPARKING

asked bud
of small thought
“Why halting?
My lift has swelled and stirred.”

and
idea
began

GROWING

asked plant
of languished idea
“Why stalling?
My vines have stretched and twisted.”

and
plans
began

SHAPING

asked flower
then of me
“Why wilting?
My petals have touched and colored.”

and
I
began

Note: My friend, Jonathan Noble has dubbed this poetry form “vers l’avant”, or forward verse. It is a free verse repeated progressively, or cyclically, through a series of stages. I love his label. My first experiment with the form was “One for the Tree: Seasons”.

My drifts have soothed and cleansed.”

of still voice
“Why silent?
My rays have warmed and brightened.”

and
lungs
began

BREATHING

asked rain
of still limbs
“Why stagnant?
My drops have restored and cheered.”

and
arms

STRETCHING

asked wind
then of me
“Why grounded?
My breath has moved and humored.”

and
I

One for the Tree: Seasons

oxygen
needs respiration
and every part of you is covered
green
not
tight

GIVING

dead skin
needs exfoliation
and every part of you is covered
brown
not
sore

SOOTHING

blankets
are for protection
and every part of you is covered
white
not
dead

DREAMING

All life
needs rejuvenation
and every part of you is covered
green
not
born

WAKING
