Cherita #18

Snow slowly melts.

Frigid rivulets
form dangling daggers.

Moonlight, through jagged reflections,
flashes pointed warning—
rising temps release nature’s knives.

    1. Great question. A cherita is a poem with three stanzas that should progressively tell a story. The first stanza is one line, second is two, third is three. (Unfortunately, if you read this on a phone, the “verse” on WP block editor doesn’t hold the lines properly. I’m still trying to figure that out. 😂)

Also, the cherita is not named but numbered. This keeps the writer from using the title to expand the available lines of the story.

It’s a fun form if you want to practice tight word selection.

      1. That makes sense. The cherita was created by ai li in memory of her grandparents. If you are interested in the form and want to read more elegant examples than mine, visit https://www.thecherita.com/origins/ .

As someone who spends most of her time writing long-form fiction, I love the challenge presented by short forms of poetry like the cherita and haiku and learn a lot from them.
